Limassol Wine Festival – August 27th to September 5th
Held at the Municipal Gardens, just across from the coastal promenade, in late August, early September, this event has been a regular fixture since it was first launched in 1961. The Wine Festival began as a tribute to the island’s long winemaking tradition, growing in size and variety over the years. Inspired by the ancient festivals dedicated to the God of Wine Dionysos and the Goddess of Beauty and Love Aphrodite, it combines fun and merrymaking with ample wine and food and a variety of performances from local and international artistic groups. Addressed to permanent residents as well as foreign guests, the Wine Festival offers an opportunity to sample different local wines from large and small wineries, and traditional Cypriot food. Another popular crowd-puller is a traditional wine press. There is a small entrance fee, but once inside all the wine is free. The Festival’s trademark is the huge “Vraka Man” that towers over the entrance with the welcoming motto “Drink wine to be healthy”.
Paphos Aphrodite Festival 2010 – Sept 2nd to 4th
La Bohème is the 4th in line opera of G. Puccini following Le Villi (1884), Edgar (1889) and Manon Lescaut (1890). The libretto is in Italian and consists of four acts, full of tragic but also comic moments just like real life. It is based on the literary work Scenes de la vie de Bohème by the French author Henry Murger but with characteristic differences in the plot from the original work of Murger. This text was processed by the librettists Luigi Illica (1859-1919) and Giuseppe Giacosa (1847-1906).
La Bohème premiered on 1st February 1896 at the Teatro Regio in Torino. It is a masterpiece which even though doesn’t follow a definite form, combines realism with pure Italian melody with great success. In the context of La Bohème the urban, emotional perception of the artists is portrayed through the description of places, slightly typified description of characters and impressive scenes while the lyric quality of the music valorises the opera of the time.
2010 PGA Euro Pro Golf Tour Championship Final – Sept. 27th to Oct 2nd
A major annual golfing event which is the culmination of 18 regional golf tournaments contested throughout the UK between 650 registered golf professionals. The top 60 players then go head to head in the final held at Aphrodite Hills to win top prize and a share of the €75,000 prize money. The final tournament will be covered extensively by worldwide TV channels including Sky Sports and ESPN.

Summer bargains: Holiday giants slash prices

They had hoped the year of the staycation was behind us, but with bookings low, tour operators are slashing their prices to try and entice UK holiday makers overseas. With price cuts of up to a third, families looking for a last-minute trip could save up to £800 on a Mediterranean holiday, with the Greek islands, Egypt, Spain and Portugal offering the best bargains. The biggest reductions were found for the Greek island of Paphos, where the figure for a one-week family holiday was down £796 to £1,521.
Co-Op Travel’s director of retail distribution, Trevor Davis, said: ‘This year has seen a number of incidents and occurrences that have created a unique scenario for the travel industry. ‘It began with the heavy snow that stalled the traditional early booking period and grounded planes, and continued with an earthquake in Chile, riots in Bangkok, civil unrest in Greece, BA strikes and finally the unprecedented volcanic eruption in Iceland, which brought the industry to a standstill for a week. ‘The continued effects of the recession, the election and the football World Cup also impacted negatively on bookings. ‘As a consequence fewer holidays have been sold, so prices have dropped to encourage more bookings.’
The group’s research found the biggest savings in eastern Mediterranean resorts, in particular Paphos, which is 34 per cent cheaper than a year ago, Crete, which is down 29 per cent and Zante at 26 per cent less. On average the price of a family holiday across the top 20 destinations for UK holidaymakers has fallen by 13.5 per cent, representing a typical saving of £232.

Properties For Sale in Cyprus – The first official presentation of the Limassol Marina took place on the 5th July, in an impressive and unique setting at the Amathus Beach Hotel in Limassol. The event marked the commencement of construction of the project and the beginning of sales of the first residential units.

The Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Mr. Antonis Paschalides spoke at the presentation, stating that:

“Today marks the beginning of a new era for Cyprus tourism and the successful cooperation between the state and private sectors”.

Mr. Paschalides also added that “the Marina works are expected to be completed by Autumn 2012. The success of this project is a given, with manifold benefits for Cyprus and its tourism as a whole. This government is developing and delivering projects to the island.” In his closing statement, Mr. Paschalides thanked all those who contributed to the fruition of the government’s objectives.

Mr. Marios E. Lanitis, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Limassol Marina Ltd, also spoke:

“The Limassol Marina project is without a doubt the biggest investment made in Cyprus, at a total estimated cost of €350m.”

Addressing the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Mr. Lanitis added: “We Cypriot businessmen have a vision for an improved Cyprus, which is why we invest in our country.”

Mr. Takis Palekythritis, Limassol Marina’s General Manager, then presented the project and announced that sales of the Nereids Residences have begun.  In his speech, Mr. Palekythritis stated:
